Roan/m

Solo Exhibition

MOMA Machynlleth - 22nd April/10th June 2023

Supported by (Arts) Territory Exchange

Roan/m investigates rights to roam, land rights and diversity in the rural landscape and the equestrian world. Roan/m is the coming together of three series of works made by SLQS, some of which were created and inspired by two research periods in Machynlleth over 2021-22.

Find.ers.Keep.ers sheds light on the threat of bridleways becoming extinguished in the UK. Since 2020, SLQS walked, ran and mapped unrecorded lanes in Essex, Hertfordshire and Mid-Wales. Through a series of performative acts, she immersed herself in the British and Welsh countryside, changing the colour of its landscape and challenging the representation of horse riders in the UK. The documentation of these performative acts - photos, videos, maps, conversations, memories, and personal reflections - became material for the creation of mixed media visual artworks

Áo dài is a series of photographs documenting performative acts challenging the traditional rural equestrian image and diversity representation in the British landscape. SLQS wears an Áo Dài, the traditional Vietnamese dress. The fabric is screen printed with public rights of way from the Definitive Map of the UK, alluding to her experience of walking these paths as a non British woman of colour. Being a second generation Vietnamese descendant born and living outside of Vietnam, wearing the Áo Dài is an act of reclaiming her Vietnamese origins and her cultural heritage. The last woman in her family tree to have worn the traditional Vietnamese dress is her grandmother Huynh Thị Trong who passed away in March 2023.

Walking Together is a meditative walk on horseback through Walthamstow Marshes exploring our relationships with more-than-humans, specifically equines, and inspired by the walking meditations of Vietnamese Buddhist monk and peace activist Thích Nhất Hạnh. This film was made in collaboration with video and sound artist Bilal Singh.

Roan/m is a mixed media exhibition of screenprints, photographs, textile and film by the artist SLQS and curated by Gudrun Filipska from (Arts) Territory Exchange
